Florida landscaping:
Florida landscaping is based of course upon the climate and flora of Florida, which is actually more diverse than you might think. In the upper part of the state, there is a freeze and thaw zone, and you won’t find too many orange and banana trees there, unless they are greenhoused and tenderly cared for. Yet if you go south, you will find the state’s Fruit and Spice Park, which is a national treasure. In this small part you can find almost every kind of exotic spice and fruit growing in one area, from cinnamon to thyme to mangos and lychee fruits. The line of demarcation for the frost season zone tends to be somewhere in the Broward to Dade County area, and if you are in Miami you will find tropical plants everywhere, attached to all the trees. There are green parakeets living wild in Miami Springs, in front of the fire station, and there are all variety of exotic tropicals such as macademia, lychee, plum, lime, mango, and even pineapple. But if you drive north to the airport or to Ft. Lauderdale, you will see that although the flora is still kicking with citrus and other great fruiting trees, the exotic tropical varieties cannot quite hack the chilly temperatures.
Florida landscaping also tends to be arid and dry, for the area itself is dry in many parts. Of course the exception is the Everglades, where it is constant swamp, and all sorts of wild things grow there that are akin to what we might see in the tropical swamps of Louisiana, in Cajun country. You can find orchids and alligators in this part of the state. But in other regions, especially near the beaches in the middle of the state, and up into Gainesville, you will find lots of sand, seashell, and crushed rock and other types of minerals like shale, shell, calcium deposits, and that sort of the thing. So it is a great idea to use a little pebble or sand if you are doing some Florida style designs, because that will give it an authentic look and feel.
